Gandhi Nagar Market is a wholesale market.

After receiving information about the blaze, the fire brigade reached the scene and began efforts to douse the flames. It took three fire brigade vehicles to extinguish the fire and it was brought under control after about three hours. However, by then, the clothes stored in the shop had already been destroyed.

Fire brigade officials said the cause of the fire was not yet known. They said the shop was closed and it was possible that a short-circuit could have caused the blaze.

They said streets in Gandhi Nagar Market were narrow, making it difficult to control the situation. The fire brigade swung into action after receiving information in the morning and the fire was brought under control.

Raman Mehta, a shopkeeper in the market, said shop was owned Manpreet Singh Bunty. Had the fire brigade not been able to control the fire in time, nearby shops could have been damaged as well.

Shopkeepers said both floors of the shop were filled with clothes, which were reduced to ashes.
