A man was brutally attacked at New Puneet Nagar here on Friday. The victim was taken to a private hospital here. Owing to his critical condition, he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Sachin Tiwari. He was the only son of his family.

According to his family members, Sachin was having an affair with a girl in Ludhiana. The matter also reached the police after the girl’s parents objected to their relationship.

Rakesh, uncle of the deceased, said Anuj Yadav, Baljeet Singh and two other unidentified accomplices cornered Sachin on December 27. They brutally attacked him with sharp weapons.

Deepak Jha, an eyewitness, said the miscreants, who came on motorcycles, stopped Sachin in broad daylight. He ran away and hid in a house. The accused dragged him out of the house and beat him up. Later, they attacked him with sharp weapons. Considering him dead, the accused fled the spot. A video of the victim lying in a pool of blood also went viral.

The Tibba police arrested Anuj and Baljeet on Saturday. Efforts were on to identify other assailants. A case of murder was registered against the accused.
