Soon after assuming the charge as the MC Commissioner, earlier this week, Dachalwal had ordered a survey across the city, following which the cleanliness drive has now been launched to cover all the major roads and markets of the city.

An MC official said joint teams of the health branch, B&R branch, horticulture and tehbazaari wing had been formed for taking up the drive so that no aspect of cleanliness was missed. Zonal schedules had been prepared on the basis of the survey to cover all the major roads and markets and deadlines had been fixed to ensure effectiveness, the official added.

On Thursday, Zone-A teams took out the cleanliness drive along the old GT road starting from Jagraon bridge, near clock tower among other areas, while Zone-B teams conducted the drive around Samrala chowk. Zone-C teams conducted the drive from Dhuri Line flyover till Dholewal railway line. Zone-D teams commenced the cleanliness drive at fountain chowk, Rani Jhansi road, college road, cemetery road and Dugri road, among other areas.

Zonal commissioners also moved to the field for monitoring the cleanliness drive in their respective zones on Thursday.

Dachalwal said joint teams of different branches had been formed to ensure that apart from waste, any rubble, green waste/weeds or encroachments on the road portions were also removed and that the area gave a cleaner look. He added the MC would also be conducting surprise inspections for monitoring the situation at ground level.

Dachalwal also appealed to the residents to support the authorities in keeping the city clean and green. He urged the residents to stop dumping waste in open spaces and hand over segregated dry and wet waste to the garbage collectors. He stated that the goal of a clean and green city could only be achieved with the joint efforts of residents and authorities.
