Stagnant water and waterlogging during the rainy season create difficulties for residents and commuters in the city. Rainwater accumulates on several city roads, often taking three to four hours to recede due to improper drainage systems and lack of adequate pumping machinery. To address the issue, the Municipal Corporation has identified eight vulnerable spots that cause maximum inconvenience during rainy days.

Talking to The Tribune, MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal said with troublesome points now identified, the focus would shift to ensuring proper drainage in these areas so that the problem could be resolved before the next rainy season.

The eight identified vulnerable spots include Vishwakarma Chowk, where chronic water accumulation disrupts traffic; Transport Nagar, a major industrial zone suffering from poor drainage; Chandigarh Road near Police Colony, where regular waterlogging turns the stretch into a bottleneck; Sherpur Chowk, a key junction requiring urgent storm water management; Ferozepur Road outside Grand Walk mall and its opposite side, a high-footfall commercial area that gets choked during rains; Verka underpass on both sides, where pumping station upgrades and redesign are needed; Hambran Road, a vital link affected by poor slope drainage; and Metro Road Focal Point, which requires a sustainable drainage system.

Superintending Engineer Ekjot Singh said the issues at the eight points must be addressed before the next monsoon season. Consultants would be hired for locations, including Sherpur Chowk and Transport Nagar. For two sites — Metro Road Focal Point and Police Colony on Chandigarh Road — tenders have already been floated.

“We are hopeful to start works on these points within the next two months as the aim is to complete the task before the onset of the next monsoon. The cost of each point varies as per design and nature of work, ranging from a few lakhs to a few crores,” the SE said.
