Pawan, Puneet race to glory in GNDEC athletics meet

Pawan Singh, a student of computer science and engineering (CSE), and Puneet Grewal of BBA, emerged winners in the 1,500m race in the category for boys and girls, on the opening day of the two-day 64th Annual Athletics Meet of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College being held here on Thursday.

In the 1,500m race, in the boys’ category, Gurpreet Singh, a student of mechanical engineering, secured the second position while Tanvir Singh finished third among girls. The second and third positions were bagged by Kashish of electrical and communication engineering, respectively.

In the triple jump event for boys, Jaspinder Singh of electrical engineering, Iftkhar of mechanical engineering and Harman of civil engineering won the top three positions while in 110m hurdles race, Utkarsh of civil engineering came out triumphant. He was followed by Manpreet Singh of BCA and Bhavjeet Singh of mechanical engineering at the second and third spot, respectively.

In the girls’ section (javelin throw), Taranveer Kaur of computer science and engineering fetched top position while Manya of electrical and communication engineering finished at second place. Simranjeet Kaur of computer science and engineering had to be content with third position.

Dr Buta Singh, former vice-chancellor, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Bathinda and an alumnus of GNDEC, declared the meet open. HS Dhillon, secretary of the Alumni Association and Harmanpreet Kaur, national-level weightlifter, were the guests of honour at the opening ceremony.

Dr Sehijpal Singh, principal, GNDEC, welcomed the guests and wished the participants good luck. Iqbal Singh, Director, Nankana Sahib Education Trust, highlighted the importance of sports in the holistic development of students, urging them to embrace a sporting spirit not only in their academic pursuits but also in their personal lives.
