Doraha Municipal Council initiated repair work on the Sidhu Hospital road after it’s miserable condition, and the plight of commuters thereof, was highlighted in the columns of this newspaper last week.

Potholes on the surface of the road had made commuting a cumbersome affair. Moreover, the ripped and damaged surface, coupled with deep potholes, obstructed the smooth flow of traffic. Commuters said they had been facing the ordeal for three months due to the apathy of the authorities concerned.

Doraha Executive Officer Harnarinder Singh said the work could not be started due to torrential rains. “As soon as the rains subsided, the technical team was put to work immediately and the construction of the road started. If everything goes well and the weather remains favourable, we expect the same to be completed within 15 days. The process had begun much earlier but it took time to get approvals and initiate the work,” the EO added.

Nagar Council president Sudarshan Kumar Sharma stated, “Since the road was dug up for laying water pipes, passers-by and commuters were facing problems. The rains, too, aggravated the situation. We have begun the construction of a new road at the cost of Rs 28 lakh.”

Residents were up in arms against the MC for having dug up the stretch from telephone exchange to Beant Singh Chowk and not repairing it. The condition of the road was so bad that it had ceased to exist. It had been converted into a pool of water. At night, the depressions on the road surface acted as a catalyst in aggravating the threat of accidents. The horrifying condition of the road had been conveyed to the authorities concerned multiple times, but to no avail. Residents of Dashmesh Nagar were forced to travel an extra mile to reach the vegetable market adjacent to Sidhu Hospital causing inconvenience and increasing their travel time.
