The occupants, however, escaped unscathed. While Payal SDM Pardeep Bains has assured all possible support to the families, several NGO’s have come forward to help them.
Sharing information with this correspondent, Gurvinder Singh, an occupant of the house, said his father, Balbir Singh, and his uncle, Ranjit Singh, were both daily wagers. “The family is in a state of complete shock. We were just able to sustain ourselves on their daily wage. That, too, sometimes wasn’t available due to a scarcity of work. With the roof collapse, it seems our whole world has been shattered. We have simply no resources to rebuild the house or make amends in any way,” added Gurvinder.
The family is now struggling to cope with the aftermath. They have urged the government and a few NGOs for help in this hour of need. “We have been ruined completely. Sustaining the family on a meagre wage was otherwise difficult, what will become of us now? We earnestly request those who feel our pain, to come to our aid, if possible. Each penny offered will be worth thousands at this critical juncture,” said the frustrated Balbir, one of two aggrieved brothers.
SDM Bains said the affected family would be provided relief and rehabilitation. “The aggrieved families will first have to apply to the department, after which they will be given help per the norms,” the SDM added.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh Welfare Education Society, headed by Gurjot Kaur, has come forward to assist the family. They promised to help them build the house and help get their first daughter married.
