Service lanes in Sahnewal have turned from bad to worse due to the ill-timed milling operations conducted by the authorities concerned during the monsoon. While commuters continue using these lanes, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is yet to wake up from its slumber.

The vanishing service lanes, have reduced the lives of commuters to a virtual hell. The road has developed massive potholes and its edges have eroded, to an extent where the road is not visible anymore.

The gravity of the matter has been conveyed to the authorities concerned several times, but to no avail. The potholes and uneven surface have led to numerous fatal accidents. “The authorities concerned seem to be utterly unconcerned about the safety of commuters, who are forced to navigate these hazardous roads,” rued a commuter.

“The peeled surface causes severe discomfort, especially for the pillion rider. The risk of skidding, too,” shared still another frustrated commuter.

“The situation becomes worse when it pours. The muddy road turns into sludge and vehicles get stuck in it, causing traffic jams,” said Harkirat Singh Dhillon of Sahnewal.

“The situation has turned from bad to worse as the NHAI has not spared any thought for the public, which faces a breakdown of vehicles as well as bones on account of the bad roads,” said Jaskirat Kaur Bulara from Jugiana village.

Contractor Jatinder Monty said the work of re-carpeting had been delayed due to the monsoon. “Temporary repairs shall be initiated today itself while the work of adding bitumen and concrete shall be started from September 1,” he added.
