What is your experience of handling difficult situations as a principal?

Facing challenges as a principal is a routine but how one handles them makes all the difference. Calmness, compassion and clarity are my sutras to handle difficult situations.

With rising competition among students, is it too stressful for the ‘average’ ones?

Yes, of course it is, especially for the students who may not be high achievers as they know that the emphasis is on competition these days. Extraordinary performance and persistent achievement can enthuse some students, while some others may be less content. Students should be encouraged to improve persistently instead of focusing on ranks only.

What is the role of parents and teachers in shaping students’ future?

The role of parents and teachers is complementary in shaping the future of their wards. I prefer working as an example interacting with students and parents regularly ensuring that conversations are positive and cooperative. Odd and tough situations may arise occasionally and these challenges have become more noticeable in recent years. Social media also has its implications. While technology offers many learning benefits its excessive use can be harmful too and we should ensure that we continue using technology for the benefit of our wards and don’t allow it (technology) to be our master. Growing generational gap between parents and their children is another challenge which needs to be dealt with.

Parents claim education is becoming increasingly expensive. Why the hue and cry over the rising cost?

Yes, we do understand the concerns raised by the parents regarding fee, uniform and books but also believe that it is more important to know the reasons behind this tendency. Parents should try to comprehend that we are committed to providing not just basic teaching, but also holistic, modern and competitive education to enable students to compete at a global level. Schools spend huge amounts on arranging highly qualified and trained teachers, digital tools and technology in classrooms, laboratories, libraries and facilities for undertaking extracurricular activities.

Is the competition over better grades among students healthy?

Competition can be healthy if managed the right way. Students perform better when they compete with their peers in a positive and respectful manner under a motivating environment.

Your advice for educators to shape future of their students?

Anyone concerned with education should understand that shaping the future of students is not just about helping them pass exams, it is about preparing them for a successful life.
