Snatcher drags woman, escapes with handbag

A woman was seriously injured during a snatching attempt in Model Town here on Friday afternoon, despite heavy security deployed for Independence Day in the city.

The attacker, riding a scooter, dragged the victim during the first futile attempt, returns and makes two rounds around unconsciously lying victim before fleeing the scene with her handbag.

The incident occurred near the residence of the victim, identified as Alka Malhotra, who was returning from a nearby market.

The suspect spent a few seconds at the scene while visiting it twice and fled from the place when residents came out of their houses.

The victim was walking through a posh residential area when the man on an Honda Activa scooter tried to snatch her handbag. She resisted his move, holding tightly her bag even when she was dragged on the road by the suspect.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was undergoing treatment at a city hospital.

SHO Balwinder Singh said joint teams of the CIA wing and Model Town police initiated investigation in the matter to trace the suspect.

“We will arrest the snatcher soon,” he said.
