The police have also recovered the body of the deceased from the Abohar branch of the Sirhind Canal, near Tuggal village, in Ludhiana. Besides the Maruti Swift car and two motorcycles used in the crime were also seized.
The suspects have been identified as Harpreet Singh of Mohi village, Gurtejpreet Singh Mohi and Gurwant Singh, a resident of Dakha village in Ludhiana district.
SSP Ankur Gupta said prompt and coordinated action taken by police officials, supervised by SP (D) Harkamal Kaur, DSP (D) Inderjit Singh Boparai and Dakha DSP Varinder Khosa, had helped in cracking the case in which three miscreants had abducted a taxi driver from Ludhiana in the wee hours of Monday and thrown his body in the Abohar branch of the Sirhind canal near Tuggal village after killing him.
The suspects hired the car on the pretext of going to Raikot town. The vehicle was later found parked at Mohi village near Sudhar.
“Having received a tip-off about the incident and movement of the car in the Sudhar area, we deployed teams to rescue the victim and nab the suspects,” said Gupta, claiming that they were arrested from different places on Monday,
Though the police are yet to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the murder, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had killed the victim with an ulterior motive of looting cash, valuables and the car.
However, they killed the victim on finding that he had no cash and valuables with him and left the bloodstained car at Mohi village after sensing that they were being followed.
Earlier, Narinder Kaur of Asha Puri Colony in the Agar Nagar area had informed the police that the suspects had allegedly abducted and assaulted her husband Gurmeet Singh after hiring his taxi from a taxi stand near Grand Walk Mall here around 2.30 am on Monday.
The victim had sent a live location to one of his friends Raminder Singh Laddi, which showed that his mobile got switched off when checked about 3.40 am after the vehicle reaching Hissewal village near Mullanpur.
