VB nabs ACP, reader for taking ~30K bribe

Ludhiana, August 1
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state on Thursday has arrested Nirdosh Kaur, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), women cell, Ludhiana, and her reader Beant Singh while taking Rs 30,000 as a bribe.
Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson for the state VB said both police personnel had been arrested based on a complaint lodged by Pritpal Kumar, a resident of Goudha village in Bathinda district.
He said the complainant had approached the VB and got recorded his statement that five years ago his maternal nephew Ashwani Kumar got married with a girl belonging to Ludhiana. After marriage, their relations became strained and his wife had moved a complaint against him at the women cell, Ludhiana.
The complainant further alleged that during inquiry proceedings of the complaint, Beant Singh, reader, had introduced him to the women ACP. “After the meeting, the reader told the complainant that if he wanted to get the case in his favour, he has to give a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. But on repeated request of the complainant, the reader agreed to get the work done by taking a bribe of Rs 60,000,” he added.
The complainant alleged that on July 29, 2024, the reader, had taken Rs 30,000 in the presence of the ACP as first instalment and asked to pay the remaining amount on August 1, 2024. The complainant has got recorded the demand and acceptance of the bribe money of Rs 30,000 by the reader and the ACP, which was handed over to the VB as an evidence. The spokesperson said after a preliminary probe of the complaint, the VB police station, Ludhiana range, has registered an FIR on Thursday under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 61(2) of the BNS against both supects. Subsequently, a trap was laid by the VB team in which both of them had been arrested while attempting to take second instalment of bribe money of Rs 30,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. In this regard, further investigation in the case was on and the duo would be produced in the competent court tomorrow, he said. — TNS
