Residents had gathered to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries at separate locations in the city on Wednesday.

Visitors to Gandhi’s statue installed at the entrance of the MC’s Zone A office were in for a surprise when they noticed that his spectacles were missing from the statue.

“If the authorities cannot even protect the statue of the Father of the Nation, what else can we expect from them,” a local resident, Surinder Kumar, who had come to pay floral tributes to him on Gandhi Jayanti, quipped.

Meanwhile, civic body officials feigned ignorance and assured to look into the matter.

Shastri’s statue, however, was found in a proper condition near the Daresi ground here.
