Ahead of Unlock 2 from Monday, India was marginally lagging behind the UK, currently at the fourth spot on the WHO tally of cases worldwide.

With a record daily surge of 9,971 cases as per the Health Ministry’s morning updates, India’s total count now stands at 2,46,628 closely behind UK’s 2,83,315. National recoveries as of today were 1,19,292 at a rate of 48.36 and deaths 6,929.

The late evening updates of cases — a practice the Central government discontinued mid-May after cases began to peak — could well take India to the fourth spot on the WHO, dashboard surpassing even the UK. Maharashtra and Delhi today accounted for 41 per cent of new cases nationally. While Delhi made up 13 pc of the daily case spike today, Maharashtra accounted for 33 per cent. — TNS
