The CBI has instituted a preliminary enquiry (PE) into a graft case against former Managing Director of the Uttar Pradesh Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation BK Yadav for his involvement in alleged corruption in transfers, postings and promotion of staff during the period of Samajwadi Party (SP) rule (2013-17) in the state.

Agency officials said the UP Government had recommended a CBI probe into the allegations against Yadav on November 10, 2017, which was forwarded to it by the Centre on April 1 this year.

The development could be seen in the context of upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh in first half of 2022, as the ruling BJP will be pitched against regional forces like the SP and BSP, besides the Congress and a few others.

The officials said, as a first step to proceed on the probe journey in the case, the CBI has lodged a PE and would make an assessment whether there is enough prima facie evidence to register a regular FIR. — TNS
