The CBI has filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court challenging an earlier order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court that had upheld the notification of the Punjab Government to withdraw investigation in the Bargari sacrilege case form the central probe agency.

Stating this before the Special CBI court in Mohali today, the CBI averred that the SLP is expected to come up for hearing in the SC within the next 28 days.

The legality of the state government’s notification of September 2019 for withdrawal of the three cases associated with sacrilege-related violence from the CBI was challenged in the HC, which had ruled that it did not feel the necessity to interfere in the decision of the state or to set aside consequent notifications.

The CBI also submitted a document in a sealed cover to the court, stating it to be part of the report of its investigations into the case. It also pleaded that the cover should not be opened until another associated document was submitted in a sealed cover.
