CBI registers DA case against Shivakumar, conducts searches

The CBI today registered a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case against former Karnataka minister and Congress leader DK Shivakumar and has conducted searches at 14 locations during which it claimed to have recovered Rs 50 lakh so far.

The CBI has registered a fresh case against the Congress leader based on source information from another agency, they said, adding that the information relates to assets amassed during his tenure as a minister in the Karnataka Government.

After the FIR, the CBI teams conducted searches at 14 locations — nine in Karnataka, four in Delhi and one in Mumbai, an official said, adding that so far Rs 57 lakh in cash and incriminating documents, including property deeds, have been recovered from the premises of Shivakumar and his family members. Sources said the places, which were searched included properties of Shivakumar’s brother and MP from Bengaluru rural DK Suresh.

The Congress accused the BJP of playing an “insidious game of intimidation” through its “puppet CBI”. It questioned the timing of the raids, as byelection to two Assembly seats in Karnataka is to be held on November 3, and termed it as “witch-hunt” by the BJP against its political rivals.

Govt issues SOPs for reopening schools

• Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal on Monday said the govt has prepared SOPs/guidelines for the reopening of schools
• States and UTs will prepare their own Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for health, hygiene and safety and learning with physical distancing
• States, UTs can consult experts and organisations and decide whether they can open schools from Oct 15
• Students may attend schools only with parents’ written consent. There will be flexibility in attendance norms. Students may opt for online classes
• Precautions have to be taken for preparing and serving midday meals
• There will be no assessment till up to two-three weeks of reopening of schools. tns
