CM Mamata Banerjee, who extended the lockdown in the state till April 30, has objected to the Commerce Ministry’s circular, saying contributions to the CM’s or state relief fund would not qualify as corporate social responsibility (CSR) expenditure, while donation to the PM CARES Fund would.

“This is discriminatory and I have told so to the PM today during his meeting with chief ministers through video-conferencing,” Banerjee told newspersons here. The circular has said donations to the State Disaster Management Authority to combat Covid-19 can be counted as admissible CSR expenditure.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today said on Twitter that the circular went against the constitutional principle of federalism. — TNS
