Media with other biz interests vulnerable: CJI NV Ramana
New Delhi, July 26
Describing independent journalism as the backbone of democracy, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Tuesday said it gets compromised when media houses enter other business.
“In the present day and age, some media houses have entered multiple other ventures, diluting their primary work. When a media house has other business interests, it becomes vulnerable to external pressures,” the CJI said.
Speaking at the launch of “Gita Vijnana Upanishad”, authored by journalist Gulab Chand Kothari, the CJI said, “Often, the business interests prevail over the spirit of independent journalism. As a result, democracy gets compromised.”
He said, “Independent journalism is the backbone of democracy. Journalists are the eyes and the ears of the people.”

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now
in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is
run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling English daily in North India, publishes news and views without any
bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and
partisanship, are the hallmarks of the newspaper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense
of the term.
The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
