The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the apex decision-making body of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), on Tuesday approved projects to get new bulletproof jackets and carbines for the Army.

Rs 28,732 cr projects

  • Four lakh carbines for close-quarter battles to be acquired
  • Bulletproof jackets to offer more protection against snipers

Headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the DAC accorded the acceptance of necessity (AoN) for bulletproof jackets, which offer enhanced protection against the threat of enemy snipers to Indian troops deployed along the LoC and in combat operations in counter-terrorism scenario. The AoN is like a green signal for a project.

The DAC also accorded AoN for the induction of four lakh carbines meant for close-quarter battles. These two are among the range of projects that have been okayed and entail capital acquisition proposals amounting to Rs 28,732 crore. All the projects are “make in India”.

The DAC also cleared three proposals worth Rs 8,599 crore of the Army — extended range rocket ammunition, area denial ammunition and specialised infantry combat vehicle designed and developed by the DRDO.
