The first Indian study on vaccine efficacy in frontline workers has shown 95 per cent protection from death after two doses of India-made Covishield and Covaxin and 82 per cent protection after single dose of the vaccine.

The largest study so far in the frontline segment on 1,17,524 policemen of the Tamil Nadu police department showed that both Covishield and Covaxin offered significant protection against mortality. Between February 1 and May 14, 32,792 cops of the Tamil Nadu police department received one dose of any of the two vaccines; 67,673 received two doses and 17,059 did not get vaccinated at all.

The study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research reported 31 Covid deaths in the study group between April 13 and May 14.

“Of these 31, four had taken two doses of the vaccine, seven had taken one dose and 20 were not vaccinated. The incidence of Covid deaths among the vaccinated with zero, one and two doses were 1.17, 0.21 and 0.06 per 1,000 police personnel,” the researchers say.
