The Election Commission (EC) today said a data entry operator and his accomplice (a private person) have been arrested in Saharanpur for attempt to breach its database, which otherwise is “absolutely safe and secure”. It said the database was safe.

The operator was posted in the office of Assistant Electoral Roll Officers (AERO) in Nakud subdivision of Saharanpur district in UP.

The EC said this after reports on alleged hacking into its website and creating hundreds of fake voter IDs came to light. SP leader Akhilesh Yadav demanded a probe. “The AEROs are mandated to provide citizen-centric services, including printing of voter ID cards and timely distribution of the same,” the EC said. — TNS
