Noted economist Isher Judge Ahluwalia died today after battling brain cancer for months. She was 74.

The wife of former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Isher Judge carved her niche in the sector serving as the head of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Affairs (ICRIER) for 15 years. She stepped down as the ICRIER chairperson on August 10 this year due to poor health.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led the condolences and visited Ahluwalia’s residence. Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh tweeted, “Saddened to learn of the passing away of Dr Isher Judge Ahluwalia, one of India’s most distinguished economists. We had the privilege of having her as the vice-chairman of state Planning Board in my last term. Heartfelt condolences to Montek ji and family in this hour of grief.”
