For the first time in 135 years, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly will not have any Congress member. Deepak Singh, the only Congress member, retired today. The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council was constituted on January 5, 1887, and the first meeting held on January 8, 1887, at Allahabad. Since then, the Congress has always had membership in the Upper House of Uttar Pradesh.

In all, 10 members from the UP Legislative Council retired on Wednesday, including Deepak Singh of the Congress. Two days ago, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had counted among his achievements the fact that the state Legislative Council was soon becoming “Congress mukt”.

In the state Assembly elections earlier, the Congress posted its worst ever electoral performance in history with only two MLAs getting elected. In the 2017 UP elections, the Congress had won seven seats.
