A group of local boys playing in the Yamuna near the Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) flyway found an old and rusted hand grenade inside an earthen pot from the riverbed, the police said on Sunday.

Teams of the Special Cell and National Security Guard (NSG) were called to the spot, which then defused the grenade and cordoned off the area.

A senior police official said, “Some children were looking for coins and other objects in the river when they found the pot. The grenade was wrapped in a cloth. They informed their parents, who then called the police. We suspect that someone threw the pot into the river from the bridge.”

Delhi Police Additional PRO Abhishek Kumar said an FIR had been registered under the Explosives Substances Act. “The police have launched a probe and analysed footage from the area, but have not yet found anything suspicious,” he said.
