An Italian tourist, who was treated for coronavirus at SMS hospital last week, on Friday, died of a “cardiac arrest” at a hospital, here, said Rajasthan government’s medical and health official.

The deceased was identified as, 69-year-old, Andrea Carli.

In an official statement by FORTIS by the additional chief secretary of medical and health, Rohit Kumar Singh, said: “Patient’s death has occurred due to heart failure”.

“It is reiterated that the patient was free of COVID-19 since March 14, 2020. It is also relevant to mention that he was a chain smoker and otherwise vulnerable”, Singh said.

“After recovering from COVID-19 on March 14, when his clinical report came negative he was in the SMS hospital, he said, adding on March 19, a team of FORTIS came for transfer for further management of co-morbidity at their facility. The experts advised for intubation only for transfer”, Secretary said.

“Carli’s wife asserted that she is satisfied with the treatment given at SMS hospital and appreciated the team of doctors”, he quoted.

Italian Ambassador was in constant touch with the Rajasthan government and the FORTIS hospital management.

When The Tribune contacted a top administrator of FORTIS hospital, he said, the patient did not die of coronavirus as he tested negative after recovering. He suffered a severe lung and liver infection, followed by a cardiac arrest.

He was on life support system since March 19.

The Italian couple were admitted to SMS hospital on February 29 and confirmed for coronavirus on March 2 by NIV, Pune.

On March 14, his blood report stated that he tested negative for coronavirus.

Adrea’s wife is still under treatment at the hospital.

Carli’s body is kept at the mortuary, and is waiting for the Embassy and the State Government’s joint action.
