Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has nominated Justice Surya Kant as the chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.

Justice Kant was nominated to the post by CJI Khanna in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 with immediate effect, an official notification dated November 12 stated.

The post of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee chairperson was earlier held by the Supreme Court’s senior-most puisne judge, Justice BR Gavai, who was recently appointed as the Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee was set up to provide legal aid to marginalised and weaker sections of society and ensure equal access to justice – a constitutional mandate under Article 39-A of the Constitution.
