Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari has been appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, it was officially notified on Tuesday.

The appointment of Justice Bhandari—the senior-most judge of the Allahabad High Court—was necessitated in view of the fact that current Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav was due to retire on June 25.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the

President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari, senior-most Judge of the Allahabad High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 26th June, 2021 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Sanjay Yadav, Chief Justice, Allahabad High Court, the official notification read.

Appointed as Judge of the High Court of Rajasthan High Court on July 5, 2007, Justice Bhandari was transferred to the Allahabad High Court where he took oath as judge on March 15, 2019.

Before being elevated to the Bench, Justice Bhandari practised in the Rajasthan High Court at Jodhpur and Jaipur, the Central Administrative Tribunal, Jaipur.

He also practised in Supreme Court where he handled Constitutional, Civil, Service, Labour, Criminal and Arbitration matters and specialised in Constitutional, Service, Labour and Arbitration matters.

As a lawyer, he served as the Standing Counsel for Railways, Rajasthan Road Transport Corporation, Nuclear Power Corporation, State Election Commission, Rajasthan University, all the Government Electricity Companies of Rajasthan, Jaipur Development Authority, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, Rajasthan Housing Board, Ganga Nagar Sugar Mills Ltd. and Rajasthan Agricultural University.
