Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today likened Sunday’s attack on students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University to the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.

“The violence at JNU reminds me of the November 26 terror attacks in Mumbai…. The cowards who hid their faces behind masks to beat up students and teachers should be arrested and punished,” Thackeray told reporters at a press conference at Matoshree.

The CM’s remarks came in for sharp criticism from the Opposition BJP.

“No can support the attack on students at JNU. But comparing Sunday’s violence with the 26/11 terror attacks is an insult to those who lost their lives,” BJP leader Ashish Shelar told reporters here.

Meanwhile, Thackeray refused to speculate on whether the JNU attacks were sponsored by any political party. “The attacks should be investigated properly. Then everything will gradually become clear. The government should order an investigation into the matter,” he said, adding that the students in Maharashtra had nothing to fear. — TNS
