Mamata Banerjee on three-day visit to poll-bound Goa; Rahul Gandhi next

Goa is set to receive two heavyweight Opposition politicians in quick succession who are engaged in a mutual competition of emerging as the leader of the anti-BJP opposition for the 2024 General Election.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Panaji on a three-day visit of the state this evening. The TMC plans to contest the upcoming Goa Assembly elections.

Banerjee will go to Betim in Panaji on Friday and interact with members of the fishermen community. She will also visit three Hindu temples there. She would return to Kolkata on Saturday evening.

Rahul Gandhi, also a strong contender for becoming the face of anti-BJP opposition in the country for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is slated to visit Goa on October 30 to kick off his party’s election campaign.

Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, have accused Mamata of indirectly helping the BJP by splitting the anti-BJP votes in Goa. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, however, said, “By the same logic, the Congress should not contest in West Bengal where the main contest is between the TMC and the BJP.”
