Mayawati declares support to NDA Vice-Presidential nominee Jagdeep Dhankar

BSP supremo Mayawati on Wednesday announced support to ruling National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) nominee for the post of Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar.

Announcing the support, Mayawati said the decision to this effect was in keeping with the interest of the BSP.

Earlier, Maywati had broken ranks with the opposition parties in extending her party’s support to NDA nominee for the post of President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

The BSP’s support to Murmu’s candidature had apparently caused dismay in the opposition’s ranks, as would be their disappointment now in its support to Dhankar.

With the numbers apparently stacked in favour of the NDA nominee with regard to election to the post of the Vice-President, Mayawati’s support would be icing on the cake for it.

Opposition parties, led by the Indian National Congress, have chosen Margaret Alva as their Vice-Presidential nominee. 

The Vice-President of India is elected through a secret ballot by an electoral college consisting of members of both the Houses of Parliament.

The election will be held on August 6.

The term of incumbent Vice- President Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10.
