With Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu directing officials to prepare a performance report of members in the Rajya Sabha, it is revealed that MPs from regional parties outperformed their counterparts from the national political outfits.

  • 33% opportunities went to the BJP having 34% strength in the House
  • 24% went to the Congress with 19% of the House strength
  • 19% share went to “others” comprising 20% of total strength

Official sources in the Rajya Sabha secretariat said different parties got their due share of opportunities of participation under various windows during the first part of the Budget Session that ended on February 11.

Noting that proportional share was given to different parties with the Opposition getting slightly more in the total 1,460 opportunities, an official said, “The BJP with 82 members, accounting for 34 per cent of the strength of 239 of the House, got 480 opportunities amounting to 33 per cent of the total, while the Congress with 46 members (19 per cent of the strength) got 345 opportunities that comes to 24 per cent.”

Others, including regional parties and Independents, amounting to 20 per cent of the membership of the House got 19 per cent share of participation, indicating broad correspondence between the strength and share of opportunities, they said.

The analysis revealed that members from the regional parties outshined others in respect of overall individual performances. Eighteen members from regional parties (60 per cent) were among the top 30 performers while eight from the BJP, four of the Congress accounted for the remaining 40 per cent. — TNS
