Alarmed by the incidents, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the state government.

“The MHA has asked the West Bengal Government for a report on the post-election violence targeting opposition political workers in the state,” an MHA spokesperson tweeted. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had a lengthy discussion on the subject with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she called on him in connection with her oath ceremony at Raj Bhavan on May 5. “It is unfortunate that many lives have been lost, several injured, houses torched in the violence,” Dhankhar tweeted.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said among those killed was a woman from North 24 Parganas.
