Defence public sector undertaking Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) on Monday will launch at sea the first of its share of three stealth frigates, of the Nilgiri class, a 6,670 tonne modern warship. The GRSE is based in Kolkata.

The Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) is making four of this class of warships, referred to as Project 17-A (P17-A). The first of the lot being made at MDL was launched at sea in September 2019.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat will be the chief guest at the ceremony. As per naval traditions, a ship is launched by a woman so Gen Rawat’s spouse Madhulika will do the honours. — TNS
