Lucknow, February 12

“Standing against injustice and the dismantling of the Constitution is the duty of every citizen,” declared Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi at a public meeting at Bilariyaganj town in Azamgarh on Wednesday.

Standing on the rooftop of her vehicle in Biliriyaganj Bazar, Priyanka assured the people that the Congress was with them in the face of “state repression”. She said the UP Government had wronged the people and she had come to express her solidarity with the women who had faced the police brutality. She pointed out that she had similarly visited the victims in Bijnore, Muzaffarnagar, Lucknow, Meerut, and Varanasi.

She interacted with a large number of anti-CAA women protestors and heard out their stories.

In the wee hours of February 5, these women allegedly faced police batons, rubber bullets and water canon in which over three dozen of them were injured, and cases of sedition were registered against 135 of them, including Ulema Council leader Tahir Madni. The women apprised Priyanka that one of the children, Sarwari Bano, injured during the alleged police action was in the ICU since then.
