A PIL in the SC has challenged the validity of Section 8 of the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Act, 2021 to the extent it permitted registration of child marriages. Passed by the Rajasthan Assembly last week, the Act amends the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2009, and requires information on child marriage to be furnished by their parents within 30 days of wedding to the registrar within whose jurisdiction the marriage is solemnised. Permitting registration of child marriages would lead to a dangerous situation and may facilitate instances of child abuse, petitioner ‘Youth Bar Association of India’ said. — TNS
