SC Collegium clears 24 names for appointment as judges in Allahabad, Calcutta, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh HCs

The Supreme Court Collegium has cleared names of 24 judicial officers and advocates for appointment as judges in the high courts of Allahabad, Calcutta, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh.

The decision was taken by a three-member Collegium headed by CJI SA Bobde in a meeting on February 4 and announced on Friday.

The recommendations came at a time when more than 400 posts of HC judges (of the total sanctioned strength of 1079) were lying vacant for months.

Of the total 24 recommendations, 11 and eight judicial officers have been recommended for evaluation as judges of the Allahabad High Court and Calcutta High Court, respectively.

Two judicial officers and an advocate have been recommended for appointment as judges of the Karnataka High Court. Names of one judicial officer and an advocate have been cleared for appointment as judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court as well.

The judicial officers elevated to Allahabad High Court are—Mohd. Aslam, Anil Kumar Gupta, Anil Kumar Ojha, Sadhna Rani (Thakur), Om Prakash Tripathi, Naveen Srivastava, Umesh Chandra Sharma, Syed Aftab Husain Rizvi, Ajai Tyagi, Syed Waiz Mian, and Ajai Kumar Srivastava-I.

Those elevated to Calcutta High Court are—Kesang Doma Bhutia, Rabindranath Samanta, Sugato Majumdar, Ananya Bandyopadhyay, Rai Chattopadhyay, Bivas Pattanayak, Subhendu Samanta, and Ananda Kumar Mukherjee.

While Rajendra Badamikar, Khazi Jayabunnisa Mohiuddin (both judicial offiers) and advocate Aditya Sondhi have been elevated as judges of the Karnataka High Court, Naresh Kumar Chandravanshi (judicial officer) and advocate Narendra Kumar Vyas have been elevated as judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
