The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to consider listing for urgent hearing a contempt petition against the Jharkhand Government and state DGP Neeraj Sinha alleging that he had been occupying the post even after his superannuation on January 31.

Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra told a Bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana that the matter had not come up for hearing despite orders for its listing.

“We will see,” the Bench said. The contempt petition alleges that Jharkhand DGP Sinha had been holding the post even after his superannuation on January 31.

The top court on July 14 last year had issued notices on the contempt plea against the state government, its top officials, and the UPSC for alleged violation of its 2006 verdict in Prakash Singh’s case on police reforms. Later, it also made Sinha a party to the case. —
