Street vendor’s son gets 45th Rank in UPSC exams

When Binod Bosak’s father heard his son Anil cleared the Union Public Service Commission’s civil services exam, he couldn’t believe it.

“I think this is a dream,” Binod Bosak, who makes a living by selling clothes on his bicycle, told NDTV. “It was very difficult (initially)… I am not educated.”

His son Anil, originally Kishanganj district in Bihar and an IIT Delhi graduate of the 2018 batch, cleared the civil services exam in his third attempt.

UPSC allows six attempts up to the age of 32 for the general category and EWS candidates, nine up to the age of 35 for OBC candidates, and unlimited attempts up to the age of 37 for candidates in the SC/ST category. 

 “He first qualified for the IIT. We were very happy. I thought now he will work. But he said he will prepare for the UPSC. His teacher also helped him a lot, he even offered to help monetarily,” Binod says, according to the NDTV report.

Anil got the 45th rank this time—a massive improvement from the 616th rank last year.

 “We are very happy. Last year he got 616th rank. He said he will appear again in the test. And he got 45th rank this time,” NDTV quotes his brother Babul as saying. “We are surprised that he got this far… This is a great moment for the entire district.”

Bihar’s Shubhan Kumar, a graduate from IIT Bombay, scored the highest rank this year.

The UPSC said 761 candidates cleared the civil services examination 2020. Results were declared on Friday.
