Police sources said the suspect, whom police identified as P Ramulu, kept changing his story to mislead investogators.

Sources said the incident came to light on Saturday morning, when some people found a headless Chandramma at her house.

Police then began looking for the woman’s head, which they later found in a water tank near the house, sources said. Ramulu went missing after the incident, arousing the suspicion of the woman’s older son, Krishnamurthy, who told the police that his brother was an alcoholic.

Police are believed to have found the sickle used to behead the victim, sources said.

A police statement released later said: “Ramulu returned home in a drunken state and demanded money from his mother. She refused to give him money following which an argument took place. In a fit of rage, Ramulu attacked Chandramma with a sickle and killed her”.

Krishnamurthy told local media that his brother had an alcohol problem for years and would frequently harass his mother for money.

The suspect has been booked for murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

This is the second case of beheading in the state this month. A man had previously been booked for killing his wife in Sangareddy’s Anantasagar over a suspected affair.
