The BJP’s charge against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of violating the model code of conduct for elections by announcing doles to clubs organising Durga puja festivals in West Bengal has boomeranged with the TMC accusing the BJP of “insulting” Goddess Durga, who is revered by Bengalis Hindu.

In a complaint submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal in Kolkata on Tuesday, the BJP drew the CEO’s attention to a programme organised by the state government at Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium on Monday which was attended by representatives of various Durga puja organising clubs of the state. The gathering was addressed by Mamata.

In response, the TMC said on Wednesday, “…now, their scant regard for Maa Durga and the traditions of Bengal stands exposed! This is an act of utter shame BJP!”

Meanwhile, Mamata accused the BJP of using Central agencies to target TMC leaders as part of its vendetta politics, as soon as the bypoll dates were announced.
