The Election Commission of India (ECI) today granted the national party status to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and withdrew the coveted tag from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI).

In its order, the ECI said: “The AAP is recognised as a national party as it has fulfilled the condition of Para 6B(iii), i.e., recognition as a state party in four states, based on its electoral performance in Delhi, Goa, Punjab and in Gujarat.”

Now, six outfits have the national party tag. These are the BJP, the Congress, the CPM, the BSP, the National People’s Party (NPP) and the AAP.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet, “National party in such a short time? This is nothing less than a miracle. Many congratulations to all crores of people of the country, who have taken us here.”

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.

The Tribune, the largest selling English daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the newspaper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.

The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
