'Not so subtle reminder you didn’t actually win': Internet reacts after American skateboarder reveals ‘cheap’ quality of bronze medal he won at Paris Olympics

The poor quality of Olympic medals came to light when American skateboarder Nyjah Huston shared videos and pictures of the bronze medal he won in Paris.

Taking to his Instagram stories, Huston said in one of the clips, “Alright, so these Olympic medals look great when they are brand new. But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and then letting my friends wear it over the weekend, they are apparently not as high quality as you would think.”

In another post, he shared a close-up shot of the medal and wrote, “Medal looking like it went to war and back.”

As he turned the camera to show the degraded quality of the medal, one could see it going rough, with a part of it starting to chip off and the medal losing its bronze colour.

The pictures and videos instantly went viral, triggering a debate on the quality of Olympic medals and the emotion of an Olympian attached to it.

One of the social media users took a screenshot from the video, and sharing it on X wrote: “Degraded quality of Olympic bronze medal after a week”

Reacting to the post, one user commented: “Maybe they washed it in Seine?”

Another wrote: “This year’s Olympics in France seems cheap from the start.”

There were comments like: “Welcome to the world of oxidation, where everything degrades over time. Some sooner and others later. If you want some award for keepsakes, ask for natural honey.”
