The Municipal Corporation (MC) has issued only 20 challans for use, sale and storage of banned single-use plastic items since the ban was imposed by the Centre Government on July 1. Despite ban, non-biodegradable and environmentally hazardous substances continue to remain in circulation and use in the city.

Officials in the health wing of the Corporation said they had confiscated single-use plastic from various shops in the city. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Aaditya Uppal said, “We will be issuing more challans for violation of single-use plastic ban in the city. A notification by the Centre Government has now been passed on to the state government as well. As such, the fine amount will also increase.”

An official pointed out that the corporation would now issue a challan of Rs 2,000 for 10 gm of banned plastics. The fine amount would increase as per the quantity of confiscated plastic, he said.
