An eight-year-old student was crushed to death under a schoolbus. The driver and the conductor of the bus have been arrested.

The victim, Jaskirat Singh, a Class 1 student of a private school in Kotla Bajwara village, had got down from the bus and was crossing the road when the driver started the bus, mowing him down, stated Gurwinder Singh, the boy’s uncle. The child was critically injured and rushed to a private hospital where he died during treatment. The victim’s father had died in 2018 and he was being brought up by his grandfather.

The family members along with villagers protested in front of the school and demanded a case be registered against its management for negligence.

A case was registered at the Badali Ala Singh police station against Darshan Singh, the bus driver, and Satpal Singh, conductor. A police team, led by SHO Amardeep Singh, reached the spot and pacified the villagers by informing them that the driver and the conductor had been arrested.

District child protection officer Harbhajan Singh Mahimi said the accident took place due to the negligence of the driver and the conductor. He said the school management was responsible for bringing the child to school and sending him back home safely. He said he had asked the police to take action against the principal of the school, too.

School MD Hardev Singh said he stood by the child’s family. He added that the bus driver and conductor were at fault. — OC
