The district unit of the Anganwadi Employees’ Union today staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, demanding that children in the 3-6 age group be kept in Anganwadi centres. The union workers raised slogans against the state government and burned copies of a Punjab Government notification which said that children be sent to schools at the pre-nursery level.

Addressing mediapersons, the state president of the union, Harjit Kaur Panjola, lashed out at the Punjab Government for the notification.

She said if the government decides to shift children in the 3-6 years age-group from Anganwadi centres to schools, a large number of anganwadi workers would be rendered unemployed.
