The bridge, located in the native village of former Cabinet Minister Chetan Singh Jauramajra, was swept away by the canal’s strong current. Fortunately, no loss of life or property was reported.
Villagers said the bridge had long been in a dilapidated condition. About six months ago, authorities were informed and heavy vehicles were reportedly barred from using it. However, locals claimed that despite repeated warnings, the movement of heavy vehicles continued unabated.
“The bridge could not bear the weight and finally gave way,” said a villager.
Residents pointed out that several old bridges in the area have outlived their lifespan and are collapsing one after another. The bridge connecting Nanhera and Nagri village had also caved in under similar circumstances earlier, said the residents.
Villagers urged the administration to inspect and repair ageing canal bridges at the earliest to prevent future mishaps.
