Following a complaint pertaining to gross “indiscipline and misconduct”, the Punjab Police have suspended a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for allegedly misbehaving with a girl student.

The 2020-batch direct DSP was undergoing the residential certified investigator course for Punjab Police personnel at the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala. “He misbehaved with the student on the campus and action was recommended,” confirmed a senior IPS officer.

Sources say that the incident took place almost 10 days back in which the DSP allegedly misbehaved with a girl student pursuing a law degree. A complaint was made to the higher authorities of the university, who later brought the matter into the notice of the special DGP ANTF who is coordinating with the university authorities on behalf of the state police.

According to the suspension orders by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav “following a letter by the ANTF; DSP (headquarter) Hoshiarpur Babandeep Singh was deputed for a course at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, from November 17 to 22”.

“A complaint has been received from RGNUL against accused DSP Babandeep Singh for indiscipline and misconduct, bringing disrepute to the police force,” read the orders dated December 8.

The DSP has been placed under suspension and has been shifted to IRB-Kapurthala during the suspension period.

The course for police officers was inaugurated by the Punjab Chief Minister in October. The course focused on taking action against drug traffickers and smugglers under the NDPS Act and “is essential to train police officers to deal with criminals” who are adopting newer and more advanced techniques.

During the training, the officers are given lodging on the university campus.
