A 24-year-old woman and her seven-month-old daughter succumbed to the burn injuries they had received on Saturday.

The deceased, Monica and her daughter Nisha, hailed from the Humayunpur area of Sirhind town. Suspecting Monica of infidelity, her husband Jagwinder Singh had set the duo on fire while they were sleeping. They were referred to the PGI in Chandigarh where they died today.

The woman’s parents and relatives staged a dharna, along with the victims’ bodies, in front of the DC office demanding immediate arrest of the suspect and registration of a murder case against him. They threatened that they wouldn’t cremate the bodies till he was arrested.

They relented after DSP Manjit Singh told them that the police had registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC against Jagwinder and teams were conducting raids at several places to nab him. The police told them that the suspect’s parents were also at large.
