First phase of Patiala canal water supply to be ready in July

The state government has sanctioned Rs 17.58 crore for the reconstruction of roads dug up for the 24x7 canal-based drinking water project in Patiala.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli stated that the necessary proposals for road reconstruction have been finalised, and residents would see the completion of repair work by April. Funds have been allocated to the Municipal Corporation.

Kohli chaired a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Dr Preeti Yadav and officials from the civic body, Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Public Works Department (PWD), Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and other departments to review the progress of the work.

Officials briefed him that out of the planned 312 km length, 192 km of pipelines for the canal water project had already been laid, while the work on the remaining 100 km was progressing at a fast pace.

Kohli said the first phase of canal water supply would commence in July 2025. He said 136 km of road length was dug up for the project, of which 83 km was already reconstructed, including 75 km by L&T, 5 km by the PWD and 3 km by the MC. The remaining 53 km will soon be rebuilt, with 5 km each assigned to PWD and L&T. The MC will pave the remaining 43 km roads using the newly sanctioned funds.

The meeting was attended by ADC (Urban Development) Navreet Kaur Sekhon, MC Joint Commissioner Babandeep Singh Walia, SE Harkiran Singh, Water Supply and Sewerage Board Executive Engineer Vikas Dhawan, PWD Executive Engineers Piyush Agarwal and Naveen Mittal, and representatives of L&T.
